Canouan Island: Reef-Protected Beaches, Superyacht Luxury and the Gateway to the Tobago Cays

Canouan Island sits at the heart of the Grenadines, combining extraordinary turquoise water, white-sand beaches and extensive coral reefs with some of the region's most sophisticated yacht infrastructure. Positioned south of Mustique and just north of Mayreau and the Tobago Cays, the island works particularly well as a luxury stop between the quieter northern Grenadines and the spectacular marine landscapes farther south. Its coastline ranges from calm Caribbean anchorages to reef-protected windward bays, while Mount Royal rises to 877 feet above the island.

Canouan has two distinct personalities. Around Charlestown and the western coastline, visiting yachts find local island life, beaches and traditional anchorages. At Glossy Bay in the southwest, Sandy Lane Yacht Club & Residences provides a modern superyacht marina with 120 serviced berths, fuel, shore power, water, provisioning and facilities for yachts up to 100 meters. The marina is also an official port of entry for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The island's natural surroundings are equally impressive. White-sand beaches line both the leeward and windward coasts, while the extensive Grand Cois barrier reef runs along much of eastern Canouan. Charlestown Bay, South Glossy Bay, Friendship Bay, Riley Bay, Windward Bay and Carenage Bay each offer a different coastal experience. With the Tobago Cays only around six miles from Sandy Lane Yacht Club, Canouan is also exceptionally well positioned for one of the most anticipated passages of any Grenadines yacht charter.

Most visiting yachts approach Canouan from Mustique to the north or from Mayreau and the Tobago Cays to the south. The western side contains the island's principal conventional anchorages, while Glossy Bay provides the most developed marina facilities. Sandy Lane Yacht Club publishes an entrance waypoint of approximately 12°41.93'N, 61°21.26'W and monitors VHF Channels 16 and 68. The marina can accommodate yachts up to 100 meters, with a stated maximum draft of approximately 5.5 meters.

Navigation around the eastern side requires greater caution because of Canouan's extensive reef system. Current cruising information states that anchoring is prohibited on the east coast, while Anse Guyac is also closed as an anchorage. Captains should therefore rely on current charts and local restrictions rather than treating the reef-protected eastern bays as informal yacht anchorages.

Charlestown Bay, also known as Grand Bay, is the principal traditional yacht anchorage on Canouan's western coast. Holding is generally good in sand, although strong northeasterly winds and northerly swell can make the bay uncomfortable. Gusts descending from the surrounding hills can also cause anchored yachts to swing considerably, so generous spacing and a securely set anchor are important.

Farther north, Rameau Bay provides another recognized anchoring option and is known for good snorkeling, although currents and tides can cause yachts to swing unpredictably. Charter yachts seeking greater security and full services can instead berth at Sandy Lane Yacht Club in Glossy Bay, which offers fuel, potable water, shore power, pump-out facilities, high-speed Wi-Fi, provisioning and dedicated superyacht berths.

Canouan has developed into one of the Grenadines' principal luxury yacht destinations without losing its local Caribbean identity. Charlestown remains the island's main settlement, while the northern part of Canouan contains private resort and residential developments. The coastline includes both accessible local beaches and more exclusive resort areas, so yacht guests should confirm access arrangements before planning shore visits to privately managed sections of the island.

The island is also unusually convenient for fly-in yacht charters. Canouan Airport lies beside the southwest coast and can accommodate small passenger jets, while Sandy Lane Yacht Club is immediately nearby. This combination of airport access, superyacht infrastructure and proximity to the Tobago Cays makes Canouan one of the most strategically useful embarkation, turnaround and mid-charter stops in the Grenadines.
