Charlestown Bay / Grand Bay: Canouan's Classic West-Coast Yacht Anchorage
Charlestown Bay / Grand Bay is a charter location in Mustique & Canouan, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.
Charlestown Bay / Grand Bay Charter Guide
Charlestown Bay, also known as Grand Bay, is Canouan's principal traditional yacht anchorage, a broad sweep of turquoise water and white sand along the island's Caribbean-facing western coast. Charlestown, Canouan's main settlement, sits directly behind the shoreline, giving visiting yachts immediate access to local island life while remaining only a short cruise from the luxury facilities of Glossy Bay. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority identifies Charlestown Bay and Grand Bay as the same location and describes it as the island's main anchorage.
The bay has a noticeably different atmosphere from Canouan's private northern resorts. Local boats, ferries and visiting yachts share the waterfront, while the long white-sand beach remains popular with residents as well as sailors. Shallow turquoise water close to shore and nearby coral areas also make Grand Bay attractive for swimming and snorkeling between excursions into Charlestown.
Its position makes Charlestown Bay particularly useful on a Grenadines yacht charter. Mustique lies to the north, while Mayreau and the Tobago Cays are the natural continuation south. Rameau Bay provides another nearby anchoring option, and Sandy Lane Yacht Club at Glossy Bay offers full marina facilities when crews need fuel, water or a more structured berth.
Charlestown Bay / Grand Bay Navigation
Charlestown Bay opens toward the northwest on Canouan's leeward coast and provides a relatively straightforward approach in good visibility. Yachts can anchor through much of the bay, although captains should keep clear of the main wharf, local vessel traffic and the concentration of moorings close to parts of the shoreline. The mooring buoys nearest shore belong primarily to charter fleets and are not automatically available to visiting yachts.
Wind and swell are the main navigational considerations. Strong northeasterly trade winds can accelerate over Canouan's hills and produce powerful gusts across the anchorage, while northerly swell can make the bay surprisingly uncomfortable. Recent cruising guidance continues to describe Charlestown Bay as potentially rough in these conditions, so crews should evaluate the forecast carefully before planning an overnight stay.
Charlestown Bay / Grand Bay Anchorage
Grand Bay offers generally good holding in sand and remains Canouan's main conventional yacht anchorage. Yachts can choose suitable open areas away from established moorings, allowing generous swinging room because gusts descending from the hills can cause vessels to move considerably around their anchors. Locally operated moorings are also available in parts of the bay, together with services delivered directly to visiting yachts.
Comfort can vary substantially with sea state. Northerly ground swell may turn an otherwise attractive anchorage into a rolly one, particularly farther out in the bay. Rameau Bay can provide an alternative in some conditions, while Sandy Lane Yacht Club at Glossy Bay is the better option for yachts seeking a full-service marina berth.
Charlestown Bay / Grand Bay General Information
Grand Bay is closely tied to everyday life on Canouan. Charlestown and the island's main wharf sit directly beside the bay, with convenience stores, local restaurants, fresh produce and other practical services available nearby. Yacht services and supplies can also be arranged in the area.
The waterfront received a major infrastructure upgrade following Hurricane Beryl. A new Grand Bay ferry terminal was officially opened on July 1, 2025 as part of the reconstruction of transport infrastructure across the southern Grenadines. Canouan is also a port of entry, with Customs and Immigration services associated with the main harbor and airport.
