Petit Mustique: Wild Private-Island Cruising Beyond Mustique
Petit Mustique is a charter location in Mustique & Canouan, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.
Petit Mustique Charter Guide
Petit Mustique is a rugged, undeveloped private island lying immediately south of its famous neighbor, Mustique. Covering roughly 100 acres, the island rises steeply from the surrounding Caribbean Sea, with densely vegetated hills, rocky cliffs and only a small sandy beach interrupting much of its wild shoreline. There are no resorts, villages or yacht facilities, giving Petit Mustique a dramatically different character from the polished luxury found just a short distance to the north.
For yacht charter guests, the attraction is precisely this sense of isolation. Petit Mustique offers a glimpse of the Grenadines before roads, villas and beach clubs, with clear water surrounding an island that remains almost entirely untouched. It can make an intriguing exploratory stop between Mustique and the smaller islands farther south, particularly for guests who value scenery, swimming and secluded cruising over facilities ashore.
The island's geography reinforces its remote atmosphere. Steep gullies cut through the hills toward small bays, while much of the coastline consists of cliffs with relatively few convenient landing places. Petit Cay lies just off the northwestern side, while the Savan group begins a short distance to the south, placing Petit Mustique within one of the quieter stretches of the central Grenadines.
Petit Mustique Navigation
Petit Mustique lies roughly one to two nautical miles south of Mustique and is straightforward to locate, but close coastal navigation requires considerably more care. Official sailing directions note a rock just above water approximately 0.1 nautical mile off the island's southern extremity, while reefs and smaller rocks are found around the surrounding waters. Current charts and good daylight visibility are therefore important when passing close to shore.
The coastline is rugged rather than naturally harbor-like. Cliffs dominate much of the island, easy landing places are scarce, and open-water swell can affect conditions around the shoreline. Captains should treat Petit Mustique as a weather-dependent cruising stop and select any close approach only after considering wind, swell, current and local sea conditions.
Petit Mustique Anchorage
Petit Mustique does not have a developed or widely established yacht anchorage comparable with Britannia Bay on neighboring Mustique. Its steep shoreline, limited beaches and exposed position mean that conditions can change considerably around the island. Any temporary anchoring should therefore be assessed by the captain using current charts, depth, seabed, swell and local conditions rather than treated as a guaranteed overnight stop.
For most Grenadines yacht charter itineraries, Petit Mustique is better suited to a short daytime exploration, scenic cruise or swim stop in settled weather. Yachts requiring secure overnight mooring, provisioning or shore services will find much better infrastructure at Britannia Bay on Mustique. Petit Mustique itself has no marina, fuel, water or provisioning facilities.
Petit Mustique General Information
Petit Mustique is uninhabited and undeveloped, with a hilly interior reaching roughly 340 feet above sea level. Unlike volcanic Mustique, the smaller island is described as sedimentary in origin, and its deeply cut gullies and near-continuous cliffs give the landscape a distinctly rugged appearance. There is also no permanent freshwater source on the island.
The island is privately owned, so yacht charter guests should not assume unrestricted permission to explore the interior or land wherever convenient. Its strongest appeal is therefore from the water, where the untouched hills, rocky coastline and isolation create one of the most unusual contrasts with the refined private-island atmosphere of Mustique immediately to the north.
