Saline Island: Hidden Reefs, Turquoise Waters and Wild Cruising off Carriacou

Saline Island from Gerard de Bruin

Saline Island is a charter location in Carriacou & Petite Martinique, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.

Saline Island Charter Guide

Saline Island is one of the most secluded yacht charter stops around Carriacou, a small private island surrounded by coral reefs, clear turquoise water and remarkably undeveloped scenery. Located just south of Carriacou beside White Island, it covers approximately 64 acres and combines a sheltered sandy bay with rocky outcrops, mangroves and a large salt pond in its interior. For yacht guests looking beyond the better-known beaches and anchorages of Carriacou, Saline offers a distinctly wilder experience.

The surrounding water is one of the island's greatest attractions. Grenada Tourism Authority specifically recommends snorkeling around Saline Island for its calm turquoise water, marine life, turtles and seabirds. Coral gardens are particularly notable around the southern end of the island, while the reef systems extending toward neighboring White Island create excellent underwater scenery in suitable conditions.

Saline Island feels far removed from Carriacou's yacht centers at Tyrrel Bay and Hillsborough. There are no public restaurants, marinas or conventional visitor facilities, and the island is privately owned. Yacht charter guests should therefore treat it primarily as a snorkeling and cruising destination and arrange permission before exploring private land ashore.

Saline Island Navigation

Saline Island sits within a reef-rich stretch of water south of Carriacou, with White Island immediately to the northwest. A recognized cruising approach leads toward the anchorage north of Saline Island, passing through waters where reef, shallow ground and current require considerably more attention than an open Caribbean bay. Good daylight, current charts and careful visual navigation are strongly recommended.

Currents are an important consideration around the island and can change direction through the channels between Saline Island, White Island and the surrounding reefs. Cruising guidance has long recommended approaching conservatively and avoiding close navigation when visibility or weather conditions are poor. The area is much better suited to experienced captains in settled conditions than casual exploration through shallow reef passages.

Saline Island Anchorage

The principal yacht anchorage lies north of Saline Island, where visiting boats can find sandy holding in approximately 5 to 10 meters depending on position. Shelter is limited compared with Tyrrel Bay, and the anchorage is best used when weather and swell are settled.

Currents can complicate swinging and positioning, particularly in the channel around the island. Crews should allow generous room, confirm the anchor is securely set and monitor how the yacht lies as the current changes. Saline Island has no marina, fuel dock or provisioning services, so yachts should arrive entirely self-sufficient. Tyrrel Bay remains the best nearby base when full marine services or more dependable overnight protection are required.

Saline Island General Information

Saline Island takes its name from the large salt pond in its interior. The island also contains mangrove habitat, white-sand shoreline and the remains of an old lime kiln, while sea turtles use parts of the coast for nesting. A recent Grenada ecosystem assessment also records mangroves on Saline Island as part of the country's remaining Grenadine mangrove habitat.

The waters south of Carriacou are particularly important for hawksbill turtles. Recent fieldwork by The Hawksbill Project identified the broader area from Saline Island toward Bonaparte Rocks as having the highest observed concentration of hawksbill turtles around Carriacou, adding significant ecological value to an already exceptional snorkeling destination.
