Petite Martinique: Boatbuilding Heritage and Seafaring Life in the Southern Grenadines

Petite Martinique is one of the most distinctive inhabited islands in the southern Grenadines, a compact community where fishing, traditional boatbuilding and life at sea remain central to everyday culture. The 586-acre island lies east of northern Carriacou and immediately south of Petit St. Vincent, completing Grenada's tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Around 900 people live here, many traditionally connected to fishing and the construction of boats.

For yacht charter guests, Petite Martinique offers a much more local experience than the private resorts and deserted cays nearby. Fishing boats line the waterfront, traditional houses climb the slopes behind the coast, and the island's relatively low tourism profile preserves an unmistakably authentic Grenadine atmosphere. Sanchez Beach and Mang Beach are the best-known stretches of shoreline, while the 750-foot Piton provides sweeping views across the surrounding islands.

Its location also makes Petite Martinique a natural cruising stop between Carriacou, Petit St. Vincent, Mopion and the islands farther north. The island is accessible only by boat, reinforcing its connection to the sea and making arrival aboard a charter yacht particularly appropriate.

The principal yacht approach is toward the western and northwestern coastline, where Albert Bay provides the island's established anchoring area. Much of the remaining coastline is either reef-fringed or exposed to the prevailing trade winds. The approach to Albert Bay is best made from the west, with captains maintaining clearance from reefs and islands when arriving around either the northern or southern end of Petite Martinique.

Petite Martinique also sits immediately across an international boundary from Petit St. Vincent, which belongs to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Yachts arriving south from SVG should remember that Grenada's current official entry procedures require vessels entering Grenada, Carriacou or Petite Martinique to complete clearance at an official Port of Entry, including Tyrell Bay Marina on Carriacou.

Albert Bay, on the northwest side of Petite Martinique, is the island's principal yacht anchorage. Cruising guidance places the normal anchoring area off the main settlement, with sand in the seabed and convenient dinghy access toward the town docks. The anchorage is protected from the prevailing easterly trades but becomes considerably less comfortable in strong western or northwestern weather.

Holding can vary, so crews should make sure the anchor is properly set and allow adequate scope rather than assuming a secure set immediately. Petite Martinique has no full-service marina, although fuel, water and basic supplies can be available ashore. Yachts needing extensive repairs, haul-out facilities or major provisioning should use nearby Tyrrel Bay on Carriacou.

Petite Martinique has one of the strongest maritime traditions in the Grenadines. Generations of residents have worked as fishermen, sailors and boatbuilders, and the island remains particularly associated with locally built vessels. That heritage is celebrated during the Petite Martinique Whitsuntide Regatta, which combines traditional boat racing with cultural events and community celebrations.

The island's highest point, The Piton, rises approximately 750 feet above sea level and provides panoramic views across the southern Grenadines. Historically, the summit was also associated with the traditional "Sugaring of the Piton" maroon ceremony held around St. Patrick's Day. Around the coastline, Sanchez Beach is known for watersports and snorkeling, while quieter Mang Beach is particularly suited to swimming and picnics.
