White Island: Powder-White Sands and Reef-Fringed Cruising off Carriacou

White Island is one of the most pristine yacht charter stops around Carriacou, a tiny uninhabited island of brilliant coral sand, turquoise shallows and reef-lined water just off the island's southern coast. Grenada Tourism Authority specifically recommends White Island as a place to explore for swimming, snorkeling and postcard-perfect scenery, making it a natural addition to a Carriacou yacht charter.

The island covers roughly ten acres and has an unusual profile, with low sandy terrain extending toward a rocky hill at its southern end. White beaches wrap around much of the shoreline, while coral reefs and clear shallows create beautiful conditions for snorkeling. Despite lying only a short distance from Carriacou, the lack of permanent development gives White Island a genuine castaway atmosphere.

White Island is particularly appealing when combined with neighboring Saline Island. The two islands form one of the quieter cruising areas south of Carriacou, offering reef snorkeling, beaches and clear-water exploration away from Tyrrel Bay and Hillsborough. For yacht guests seeking a secluded lunch stop or peaceful overnight in settled weather, White Island is one of the Grenada Grenadines' most rewarding hidden anchorages.

White Island is surrounded by coral reefs and shallow ground, with a deeper channel running close to parts of the island. Captains should approach in good daylight using current charts and careful visual navigation, particularly when entering the area between White Island, Saline Island and southern Carriacou. Strong currents can run through the surrounding passages, making close maneuvering more demanding than the island's tranquil appearance suggests.

The preferred approach is toward the waters north of White Island rather than attempting shortcuts through the reef. The combination of deep water, submerged rock, coral and changing current means the yacht should be positioned carefully before anchoring. Visibility is generally excellent, but clear turquoise water should not be mistaken for uniformly safe depth.

The principal anchoring area is north of White Island, a position recommended in long-established Grenadines cruising guidance. Current anchorage information reports anchoring as permitted, with both sand and rock on the seabed, while broader Carriacou cruising guidance places typical depths around 5 to 10 meters.

Holding can be good when the anchor is set in clear sand, but crews need to avoid surrounding coral and the submerged rock plate found through parts of the bay. Current can also reach roughly 0.5 to 1.5 knots in stronger conditions, and shelter is limited compared with Tyrrel Bay. White Island is therefore best in settled weather, although experienced crews do use it overnight when conditions are favorable.

White Island is privately owned and remains undeveloped, with no marina, restaurants, fuel, water or provisioning facilities. Current property information describes more than 3,000 feet of sandy shoreline, surrounding coral reef and a deep-water channel capable of accommodating large yachts offshore. Guests should confirm permission before treating the island's interior as freely accessible private land.

For yacht charter guests, its strongest attractions remain the water and beach. The clear reef environment is well suited to snorkeling and swimming, while nearby Saline Island provides another secluded stop within minutes.
