Battowia Island: Bird Island, Sea Cliffs and Wild Grenadines Cruising

Battowia Island is one of the wildest and most ecologically important islands in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, an uninhabited mass of steep cliffs and rugged vegetation rising from the sea east of Bequia. Often known locally as Bird Island, Battowia has none of the villas, restaurants or marina facilities found on Mustique. Instead, its attraction lies in dramatic scenery, untouched waters and the enormous numbers of seabirds that nest along its slopes and rocky coastline.

For yacht charter guests, Battowia is less a conventional island stop and more a place for slow scenic cruising, wildlife watching and exploration in settled conditions. Frigatebirds, boobies, tropicbirds, terns, noddies and gulls can all be encountered around the island. Conservation research identifies Battowia as potentially the most important breeding seabird colony in the Lesser Antilles, including globally significant populations of red-footed boobies and red-billed tropicbirds.

Battowia sits close to Baliceaux and forms part of a particularly undeveloped corner of the northern Grenadines. Bullet Cay rises immediately off its northern end, Church Cay sits on the shoal toward Baliceaux, and All Awash Island lies to the south-southwest. Together these small islands create a spectacular cruising landscape that feels considerably more remote than their relatively short distance from Bequia and Mustique would suggest.

Battowia is high and cliffy, and navigation around it requires considerably more caution than entering the established harbours of Bequia or Mustique. The latest NGA sailing directions identify Bullet, a tall rock immediately off Battowia's northern end, as well as another breaking rock approximately 0.15 nautical mile northwest of it. A navigation light is shown from the summit of Battowia.

Particular caution is required between Battowia and neighboring Baliceaux. The two islands are connected by a shoal with a least charted depth of about 3.7 meters, and Church Cay lies along its southern side. The channels beside Church Cay are described in official sailing directions as suitable only for small craft with local knowledge. Charter yachts should therefore avoid treating the gap between the islands as a convenient shortcut and use current charts and generous offshore clearance.

Battowia should not be considered a dependable yacht anchorage in the same way as Britannia Bay, Admiralty Bay or Friendship Bay. Its steep, exposed coastline, offshore rocks and surrounding shoals leave relatively few obvious sheltered positions for larger charter yachts. Conditions can also become uncomfortable quickly when trade winds and Atlantic swell increase.

For most yacht charter itineraries, Battowia is better approached as a daytime wildlife and scenic cruising destination, with the captain assessing any temporary stopping position according to depth, seabed, swell and current conditions. There are no marina facilities, fuel docks, restaurants or provisioning services on the island, so yachts must be completely self-sufficient.

Battowia is officially designated as the Battowia Island Wildlife Reserve and has held protected status since 1987. Conservation organizations continue to work on restoring its seabird habitat, with a multi-year restoration project launched in 2024 to address damage caused by invasive goats and protect nesting colonies.

The island is especially important for red-footed boobies, red-billed tropicbirds, brown boobies, laughing gulls and magnificent frigatebirds. Archaeological evidence also suggests human activity on Battowia long before the modern era, adding another layer of significance to an island now valued primarily for its wildlife. Visitors should treat the coastline and nesting areas as sensitive habitat and avoid disturbing birds, nests or other wildlife.
