Petit Canouan: Seabird Sanctuary and Wild Cruising in the Central Grenadines

Petit Canouan on the map

Petit Canouan is a charter location in Mustique & Canouan, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.

Petit Canouan Charter Guide

Petit Canouan is a tiny uninhabited island in the central Grenadines, lying north-northeast of Canouan between the larger islands of Mustique and Canouan. Covering only around 0.15 square kilometers, it is little more than a solitary green peak rising from the surrounding Caribbean, with an undeveloped shoreline and no settlements, resorts or yacht facilities. Its isolation makes it one of the most untouched stops in this part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

What makes Petit Canouan particularly important is its wildlife. The island is officially protected as the Petit Canouan Wildlife Reserve, one of the designated wildlife reserves of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It is also recognized as a Key Biodiversity Area because tens of thousands of seabirds can nest here, including sooty terns, magnificent frigatebirds, brown noddies and other migratory species.

For yacht charter guests, Petit Canouan offers a very different experience from nearby Mustique or Canouan. There is nothing to visit ashore in the conventional sense. Instead, the attraction is the opportunity to cruise past an almost completely undeveloped island, observe seabirds from the water and enjoy a remote stretch of the Grenadines where the surrounding cays, reefs and open sea dominate the landscape.

Petit Canouan Navigation

Petit Canouan lies approximately 3.75 nautical miles north-northeast of Canouan. Current NGA sailing directions also place Savan Island roughly four nautical miles east-northeast of Petit Canouan and note that a navigation light is exhibited from Petit Canouan itself. These small islands provide useful visual references when cruising between Mustique and Canouan.

Close approaches require considerably more caution. The central Grenadines contain numerous reefs, shoals, rocks and small cays, and Petit Canouan is not a developed harbor with marked entrance channels or marina infrastructure. Good daylight, current charts and careful visual navigation are therefore important. The wildlife area's own conservation documentation also notes that access to the island can be dangerous, reinforcing the need for a conservative approach close to shore.

Petit Canouan Anchorage

Petit Canouan is not a conventional yacht charter anchorage with established moorings or shore facilities. Its small size, exposed position and protected wildlife status make it far better suited to scenic cruising or a carefully assessed daytime stop than to being treated as a dependable overnight base.

Any decision to stop close to the island should be made by the captain according to current wind, swell, depth and seabed conditions. There is no marina, fuel, water or provisioning on Petit Canouan. Yachts seeking a secure overnight anchorage and shore services should continue south to Canouan, where established yacht anchorages and marina facilities are available.

Petit Canouan General Information

Petit Canouan rises to roughly 55 to 60 meters and is characterized largely by coastal grassland, cactus and limited scrub vegetation. Botanical surveys have found that much of the island's original vegetation has been altered over time, while its ecological importance today is overwhelmingly associated with seabirds rather than plant diversity.

The wildlife reserve has been protected since 1987, and conservation projects have installed signs emphasizing its protected status and the importance of avoiding disturbance to nesting birds. Yacht charter guests should therefore enjoy Petit Canouan primarily from the water and avoid disturbing colonies, nests or wildlife if approaching the shoreline.
