Charlestown, Canouan: Island Life and Yacht Cruising on Grand Bay
Charlestown is a charter location in Mustique & Canouan, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.
Charlestown Charter Guide
Charlestown is the main settlement of Canouan and the best place on the island to experience everyday Grenadine life away from its private resorts and luxury developments. The village spreads along the central western coastline beside Charlestown Bay, also known as Grand Bay, where a long beach, local homes and the island's main wharf meet the Caribbean Sea. Residents are concentrated in and around Charlestown, making it the social and commercial heart of Canouan.
For yacht charter guests, Charlestown offers a useful contrast to the polished surroundings of Glossy Bay. Small shops, supermarkets, fresh produce, local businesses and essential services are available around the village, while yachts can anchor directly offshore in Charlestown Bay. The setting feels relaxed and unmistakably local, with fishing boats, visiting yachts and residents sharing the waterfront.
Charlestown is also exceptionally well positioned within a Grenadines yacht charter itinerary. Rameau Bay lies farther north, Glossy Bay and its full-service superyacht marina are a short journey south, and Mayreau and the Tobago Cays await beyond Canouan. This makes Charlestown a natural stop for provisioning, exploring ashore and experiencing the local side of Canouan before continuing through the southern Grenadines.
Charlestown Navigation
Charlestown is approached from Canouan's western, Caribbean-facing coast through the broad waters of Charlestown Bay. The bay is the island's principal traditional anchorage and is open toward the northwest. There are no complicated marina entrance channels to negotiate, but captains should remain aware of local moorings, fishing boats and vessel traffic associated with Charlestown's main wharf.
Strong northeasterly winds can funnel down from Canouan's hills and create powerful gusts across the anchorage, while northerly swell can make conditions uncomfortable. Captains should therefore allow generous swinging room and assess both wind and swell before committing to an overnight stay. The modern marina at Glossy Bay provides a more protected, fully serviced alternative when stronger conditions are expected.
Charlestown Anchorage
Charlestown Bay is the main yacht anchorage on Canouan's west coast. Holding is generally good in sand, and visiting yachts can anchor through much of the bay while remaining clear of established moorings and shore facilities. Mooring buoys close to shore are associated with local or charter operations and should not be assumed to be available without permission.
The main challenge is the combination of gusting winds and occasional swell, which can cause yachts to swing considerably even when the anchor itself is holding securely. Crews should leave plenty of separation from neighboring vessels and secure the yacht carefully when going ashore. Current cruising guidance also advises visiting yachts around Canouan to maintain normal onboard security precautions and lock the vessel when unattended or overnight.
Charlestown General Information
Charlestown is Canouan's principal village and the location of its main wharf. It provides practical services that are less prominent in the island's resort areas, including supermarkets, fresh fruit and vegetables, banking facilities and everyday local businesses. Sandy Lane Yacht Club at Glossy Bay is only a short drive away when charter yachts require fuel, marina facilities or more extensive marine services.
The beach lining Charlestown Bay is popular with both residents and visiting sailors, helping the waterfront retain a genuinely local atmosphere. From town, guests can also explore Canouan's hilly interior or continue north toward Rameau Bay and Mount Royal for wider views across the island and surrounding Grenadines.
