Britannia Bay: Mustique's Iconic Yacht Anchorage and Sunset Waterfront
Britannia Bay is a charter location in Mustique & Canouan, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.
Britannia Bay Charter Guide
Britannia Bay is the yachting heart of Mustique, a sheltered Caribbean-facing bay where turquoise water, palm-lined shores and elegant hillside villas create one of the most recognizable yacht charter settings in the Grenadines. Located on the island's western coast beside Lovell Village, the bay is the designated arrival point for visiting yachts and the natural gateway to Mustique's famously private island lifestyle. The official Mustique visitor information asks yachts to reserve a mooring with the Moorings Office before arriving.
The atmosphere is distinctly different from the busier anchorages of Bequia. Yachts sit on organized moorings offshore, tenders move between the boats and landing jetty, and evenings revolve around the waterfront as the sun drops over the Caribbean. Basil's Bar sits directly beside Britannia Bay and has been part of Mustique life since the 1970s, becoming one of the island's most famous gathering places for lunch, cocktails, live music and sunset drinks.
Britannia Bay is also a practical base for a Mustique yacht charter stop. Shops and food supplies are available nearby, including the island's main supermarket and fish market, while boutiques can be found around Britannia Bay itself. The setting combines these useful facilities with the privacy and polished atmosphere for which Mustique is known, making the bay an easy stop between Bequia to the north and Canouan farther south.
Britannia Bay Navigation
Britannia Bay is approached from Mustique's western side and is the designated yacht arrival area for the island. Visiting yachts should contact the Mustique Moorings Office before arrival on VHF Channel 68 or 16 to confirm mooring availability and receive instructions. Current cruising guidance also warns that the former beacon on Montezuma Reef is no longer present and has been replaced by a small red and black buoy, making current charts and careful visual navigation important on approach.
Once inside the bay, captains should follow directions from the moorings team rather than selecting an independent anchoring position. Mustique's conservation rules prohibit anchoring around the island to protect coral reefs and seagrass beds. The island also maintains a 2-knot harbour speed limit, partly to protect green sea turtles that feed in the seagrass around Britannia Bay.
Britannia Bay Anchorage
Britannia Bay contains Mustique's official yacht mooring field, operated by The Mustique Company. Visiting yachts are allocated mooring buoys according to availability, and a landing jetty and dinghy dock provide convenient access ashore. Official island guidance states that boats up to 60 feet should use the provided moorings, while larger yachts should contact the Moorings Office for instructions.
The bay benefits from Mustique's landmass to the east, giving it useful shelter from the prevailing easterly trade winds. Conditions can still vary with swell and weather, so captains should assess comfort throughout the stay. Unlike many Grenadine anchorages, Britannia Bay is highly managed, which helps preserve the seabed while keeping visiting yachts concentrated in one controlled area.
Britannia Bay General Information
Britannia Bay is more than an anchorage. It is Mustique's main waterfront meeting point and one of the few places where visiting yacht guests immediately encounter everyday island life. Basil's Bar overlooks the bay and hosts its well-known Wednesday Jump Up, while the surrounding area includes boutiques, food stores and the local fish market.
Green sea turtles are also regular residents of Britannia Bay, feeding among its seagrass beds, with Mustique identifying the morning as a particularly good time to observe them. Because Mustique is privately managed and every visitor is registered, shore access and permitted areas can sometimes be restricted. Yacht guests should therefore confirm current access rules with their captain or the Mustique authorities before exploring farther around the island.
