Salt Whistle Bay: Mayreau’s Iconic Palm-Fringed Anchorage at the Tobago Cays

Salt Whistle Bay is one of the most recognizable yacht charter anchorages in the Grenadines, a near-perfect curve of white sand and turquoise water tucked into the northern end of Mayreau. A narrow palm-covered strip of land separates the calm Caribbean side from the reef-lined windward coast, creating the classic tropical setting for which the bay has become famous. For yachts cruising south from Canouan or north from Union Island, it is one of the signature stops before entering the Tobago Cays.

The sheltered water inside the bay is ideal for swimming directly from the yacht, while reefs around the entrance offer snorkeling opportunities in suitable conditions. Small beach bars and local vendors sit beneath the palms, giving guests somewhere to enjoy fresh seafood, drinks or a relaxed lunch without losing the barefoot character of Mayreau. Salt Whistle remains a relatively simple destination, with the beach and anchorage themselves providing most of the appeal.

Its location is equally important. Salt Whistle Bay lies immediately beside the wider Tobago Cays Marine Park, whose protected waters encompass extensive coral reefs, seagrass beds and important sea turtle habitat around Mayreau and the nearby cays. From the bay, yachts can cruise east toward Horseshoe Reef, Baradal and Petit Bateau or continue around Mayreau toward Saline Bay.

Salt Whistle Bay is entered from the northwest side of Mayreau. Captains approaching the bay should give the northern headland adequate clearance because reef and shallow water extend from the point. The southern side of the bay also contains coral, so yachts should avoid pushing too far toward the reef when selecting an anchoring position. Cruising guidance places the principal anchorage in the northeastern part of the lagoon.

The bay is small and becomes crowded quickly during the main Grenadines charter season. Yachts with deeper draft generally need to remain farther offshore, while shallower-draft vessels may be able to position closer to the beach. Northerly swell can occasionally work into the bay and make outer positions uncomfortable, so captains should evaluate both available room and sea state before committing to an overnight stay.

Salt Whistle Bay offers both anchoring and mooring options, although available space is limited. Recent Noonsite guidance confirms moorings for visiting yachts and specifically advises crews to verify the condition of any mooring before relying on it because failures have been reported in the past. The anchoring area is concentrated toward the northeastern section of the lagoon.

Where anchoring is permitted, sandy areas should be selected carefully and coral or seagrass avoided. The Tobago Cays Marine Park regulations specifically prohibit anchoring in coral and seagrass beds and require vessels to use moorings where provided or select sandy seabed. Current park rules also impose a five-knot speed limit and prohibit fishing within the protected area.

Salt Whistle Bay is included in the Marine Park's published mooring and anchoring fee structure, so charter crews should expect applicable park charges and confirm the latest rates locally.

Salt Whistle Bay is closely connected to Mayreau's quiet island life. Guests can walk south toward Old Wall village, where the elevated Catholic church area provides panoramic views across the Tobago Cays. Saline Bay lies on the opposite side of the island and offers a larger alternative anchorage when Salt Whistle becomes crowded.

The bay is also an excellent starting point for exploring the marine environment east of Mayreau. Nearby Mayreau Gardens is recognized by the Tobago Cays Marine Park as an important coral reef dive site with abundant fish and colorful sponges, while the wider park protects sea turtles, coral reefs, seagrass beds and other marine habitats.
