Petit Rameau: Quiet Beaches and Lagoon Cruising in the Tobago Cays

Petit Rameau is one of the five uninhabited islands of the Tobago Cays and one of the quieter places to step ashore within this extraordinary marine park. Sitting beside Petit Bateau inside the sweeping protection of Horseshoe Reef, the island is surrounded by brilliant turquoise water, coral habitat and the shallow lagoon scenery that defines yacht chartering in the southern Grenadines. Horseshoe Reef encloses Petit Rameau together with Petit Bateau, Baradal and Jamesby, while Petit Tabac lies outside the reef farther east.

Compared with the famous turtle sanctuary at Baradal or the beach barbecue atmosphere of Petit Bateau, Petit Rameau feels noticeably more understated. Low tropical vegetation covers much of the island, while small beaches and walking trails invite yacht guests ashore for swimming, exploring and panoramic views across the surrounding Cays. The Tobago Cays Marine Park specifically highlights Petit Rameau for its hiking trails, tropical flora and fauna, iguanas, birds and views across the Grenadines.

The island's position also makes it an excellent base for exploring the wider Tobago Cays by tender. Petit Bateau lies immediately alongside, Baradal and its sea turtles are only a short distance away, and Horseshoe Reef provides some of the area's best snorkeling. With no permanent settlement or commercial development, Petit Rameau retains exactly the remote, boat-accessed atmosphere that makes the Tobago Cays such an important Grenadines yacht charter destination.

Petit Rameau lies within the protected lagoon behind Horseshoe Reef, but the surrounding water still requires careful navigation. Coral heads, shallow reef areas and extensive seagrass occur throughout the Tobago Cays, so captains should use current charts, good daylight and visual navigation when maneuvering close to the island. The Marine Park imposes a maximum speed of five knots throughout the protected area.

The channel between Petit Rameau and Petit Bateau deserves particular attention. Current cruising guidance identifies it as a possible anchoring location but notes that the current can be strong. Vessels navigating or positioning here should therefore allow for current when maneuvering and avoid drifting toward shallow reef or environmentally sensitive seabed.

The waters around Petit Rameau form part of the wider Tobago Cays anchoring and mooring area rather than a separate developed harbor. Yachts can use managed moorings within the main lagoon or anchor in permitted sandy areas, but anchoring in coral or seagrass beds is prohibited. Moorings are encouraged where available because they reduce the risk of damage to the protected seabed.

A recognized anchoring option lies in the cut between Petit Rameau and Petit Bateau, where holding is reported to be good. Because the current can be strong, cruising guidance notes that bow and stern anchors may be used to control the yacht's position. Captains should assess conditions carefully and follow any instructions provided by Tobago Cays Marine Park rangers.

Petit Rameau forms part of a protected marine environment containing coral reefs, seagrass beds, turtle habitat and some of the most extensive reef systems in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The wider Tobago Cays Marine Park also supports conchs, lobsters, iguanas, seabirds and numerous Caribbean reef species.

Guests going ashore can explore the island's hiking trails and look for local birdlife and iguanas while enjoying elevated views over the lagoon. Visitors should avoid damaging vegetation, disturbing wildlife or leaving rubbish behind, and snorkeling or diving guests should never touch or stand on coral.
