Ashton Lagoon: Mangrove Restoration and Shallow-Water Wilderness on Union Island

Ashton Lagoon is one of the most ecologically important coastal areas in the Grenadines, a broad expanse of turquoise shallows, mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs along the southern coast of Union Island. Unlike Clifton Harbour or Chatham Bay, this is not primarily a yacht anchorage. Its appeal lies in exploring a protected tropical wetland where calm water, reef habitat and mangrove channels create an environment ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, birdwatching and tender excursions.

The lagoon is recognized as the largest natural bay and mangrove ecosystem in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It contains an unusually complete coastal ecosystem, including mangrove forest, seagrass beds, tidal flats, salt ponds, coral reefs and shallow protected water. It is also an Important Bird Area supporting resident and migratory herons, egrets, shorebirds, seabirds and other species.

For yacht charter guests, Ashton Lagoon offers something very different from the classic white-sand anchorages of the Tobago Cays. Visiting yachts can remain in suitable deeper water around Frigate Island and explore the lagoon's shallows by tender or watersports equipment. Ashton village lies immediately beside the lagoon, while Petit St. Vincent, Palm Island and Carriacou are natural onward destinations farther south.

Ashton Lagoon is extremely shallow in places and should not be treated as a conventional harbor for cruising yachts. Official sailing directions state that the bay south of Union Island is filled with shallow flats and that channels around Union Island require local knowledge. Frigate Island is connected to Union Island by a chain of reefs, creating additional hazards for vessels attempting to move through the inner lagoon.

Larger yachts should remain in established deeper water outside the shallowest sections and avoid attempting shortcuts through the lagoon. Current charts, good daylight and local knowledge are particularly important around Frigate Island and the reef system. For guests wanting to explore deeper into Ashton Lagoon, a tender, kayak or paddleboard is far better suited than repositioning the yacht itself.

There is no conventional deep-water yacht anchorage inside Ashton Lagoon. The protected inner waters are dominated by shallow flats, mangroves, seagrass and reefs, making them unsuitable for most charter yachts and environmentally sensitive to anchor damage.

The practical yacht anchorage lies southwest of Frigate Island, where official sailing directions report temporary anchoring in approximately 8.5 to 14.6 meters. This position allows yachts to remain in deeper water while keeping Ashton Lagoon and the village accessible by tender.

Ashton Lagoon has one of the Caribbean's most remarkable environmental restoration stories. In 1994, construction began on a proposed 300-berth marina, golf course and resort development. The project collapsed the following year, but dredging and an unfinished causeway had already disrupted tidal circulation and severely damaged the lagoon's mangroves, reefs and seagrass habitat.

A long-term restoration led by Sustainable Grenadines and its partners eventually reopened tidal channels and restored natural water circulation. By 2019, the project had also planted thousands of red mangroves and added walking trails, wildlife-viewing towers, interpretive features and twin suspension bridges across breaches in the former marina causeway. The result transformed Ashton Lagoon back into an important wildlife habitat and community conservation site.
