Clifton, Union Island: Colorful Waterfront and Yachting Gateway to the Southern Grenadines
Clifton is a charter location in Tobago Cays & Southern Grenadines, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.
Clifton Charter Guide
Clifton is the lively waterfront heart of Union Island and one of the most useful yacht charter stops in the southern Grenadines. Set beside the reef-protected waters of Clifton Harbour on the island's eastern coast, the village combines a busy yacht anchorage with restaurants, shops, markets, ferry connections and essential marine services. Its colorful streets and international sailing atmosphere make Clifton feel noticeably livelier than the secluded bays found elsewhere around Union Island.
For visiting yachts, Clifton is particularly valuable as a provisioning and logistics stop. The main street contains supermarkets, specialist yacht provisioners, cafés, boutiques and restaurants, while an open-air market opposite Hugh Mulzac Square sells fresh fruit and vegetables. Customs and Immigration are also based in Clifton, making it the principal clearance point for yachts entering St. Vincent and the Grenadines from the south.
Clifton's location makes it an ideal base for exploring the southern Grenadines. Palm Island lies just offshore, while Mayreau and the Tobago Cays are a short cruise north and Petit St. Vincent and Carriacou lie to the south. Guests can spend the morning provisioning and exploring town before continuing to quieter anchorages such as Chatham Bay or deeper into the island chain.
Clifton Navigation
Clifton is approached through Clifton Harbour, a large bay protected by extensive coral reefs. The entrance requires careful navigation because reefs and shallows surround the harbor, and recent cruising guidance warns that both marked and unmarked hazards can exist within the mooring field. Captains should approach in good daylight, use current charts and maintain close visual awareness even when receiving assistance from local mooring attendants.
Union Island Airport lies immediately beside the harbor. Aviation authorities advise yachts to avoid the airport's final approach area, so captains should be particularly conscious of aircraft movements when maneuvering around the southeastern side of Clifton Harbour. Yachts arriving internationally should proceed to Clifton Harbour for formal Customs and Immigration clearance before moving to another anchorage around Union Island.
Clifton Anchorage
Clifton Harbour is the principal yacht anchorage beside the village. Tobago Cays Marine Park is currently the authorized provider of temporary and overnight moorings in the harbor, with 19 plain white mooring buoys reported in the latest cruising guidance. The mooring area lies close to the reef, where independent anchoring is prohibited.
Yachts wishing to anchor independently can do so on the western side of Clifton Bay, provided they remain clear of coral and seagrass and select suitable sandy seabed. Several small docks and dinghy landing points also provide convenient access to town. Crews should inspect any mooring before relying on it and take normal precautions when leaving tenders or equipment unattended.
Clifton General Information
Clifton is the busier of Union Island's two principal villages and serves as its main commercial, transport and yachting center. The ferry wharf, airport, Customs and Immigration, tourism services and most of the island's shops and restaurants are concentrated here. Hugh Mulzac Square and the nearby produce market form the center of village life, while waterfront restaurants look directly across the yachts and reefs of Clifton Harbour.
Above town, Fort Hill rises to around 400 feet and occupies the site of a former 17th-century cannon battery. The climb provides panoramic views across Clifton Harbour, its surrounding reefs and the neighboring Grenadine islands, making it one of the best viewpoints accessible directly from the village.
