Mopion Island: A Tiny Sandbar Paradise in the Southern Grenadines

Mopion Island is one of the most unforgettable yacht charter stops in the southern Grenadines, a tiny patch of brilliant white sand surrounded almost completely by turquoise water and coral reef. Lying just northwest of Petit St. Vincent, Mopion is more accurately a shifting sand cay than a conventional island, with its size and shape changing according to tides and sea conditions. Its only recognizable structure is a solitary thatched umbrella standing in the sand.

There are no buildings, restaurants, roads or permanent residents. Guests arrive by boat, step onto the sand and find themselves surrounded by open Caribbean water in every direction. The reefs surrounding Mopion also make it an excellent swimming and snorkeling stop, with yacht itineraries from the region regularly including the cay as a short excursion between Union Island, Petit St. Vincent and Petit Martinique.

Mopion's scale is part of its appeal. This is not somewhere to spend an entire charter day ashore, but rather a place for a swim, photographs, snorkeling or a private picnic before returning to the yacht. Petit St. Vincent lies only a short boat ride away, while Petit Martinique rises immediately to the south across the maritime boundary with Grenada.

Navigating close to Mopion requires considerably more care than its simple appearance suggests. The cay is surrounded by shallow reef, and nearby Punaise creates another reef and sandbank hazard within the passage. Local charter guides specifically route vessels through the gap between Mopion and Punaise, but captains should rely on current charts, good daylight and contemporary local knowledge rather than historic bearings or visual assumptions.

The cay itself can also change shape as sand moves with weather and tides, reducing its usefulness as a fixed visual reference. Larger charter yachts are therefore better kept in safe surrounding water while guests approach by tender when conditions allow. Recent cruising accounts continue to emphasize the reef surrounding Mopion and the care required when getting close to the sandbar.

Mopion is best treated as a daytime stop rather than a dependable overnight anchorage. A regional cruising guide reports rocky holding near the cay and specifically advises against using it as a night anchorage. Conditions around the exposed reef can also become uncomfortable when wind or swell increases.

For most yacht charter itineraries, the safer and more comfortable approach is to visit Mopion briefly and then continue to the established anchorage at nearby Petit St. Vincent. This allows guests to enjoy the sandbar and surrounding reef without relying on an exposed, marginal anchoring position overnight.

Mopion is essentially a small sandy islet with no permanent vegetation or development. Its distinctive thatched umbrella has become a visual landmark of the southern Grenadines and provides the only significant shade on the cay. Because the sandbar is so small and exposed, visitors should arrive prepared for sun and avoid leaving any waste behind.
