Baradal Island: Sea Turtles and Turquoise Shallows in the Tobago Cays

Baradal Island is one of the most memorable stops in the Tobago Cays, a tiny uninhabited cay surrounded by luminous turquoise water, white sand and the protected marine habitats of the Tobago Cays Marine Park. Sheltered behind the sweeping curve of Horseshoe Reef, Baradal sits alongside Petit Bateau, Petit Rameau and Jamesby within the main lagoon, creating one of the most spectacular yacht charter settings in the southern Grenadines.

The island is best known for the Baradal Turtle Sanctuary, a protected area off its southwestern shore where green and hawksbill turtles can be observed feeding naturally among the seagrass. The reserve is marked by buoys, and snorkeling here offers one of the best opportunities in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to encounter wild sea turtles in their natural environment.

Baradal itself is small and undeveloped, with a sandy beach, low tropical vegetation and no permanent facilities. Its appeal is almost entirely natural. Guests can swim ashore, snorkel through the protected shallows, relax on the sand or simply enjoy panoramic views across the yacht-filled lagoon toward Horseshoe Reef and the neighboring cays. For many charter itineraries, Baradal is the defining wildlife experience of the Tobago Cays.

Baradal lies inside the protected lagoon formed by Horseshoe Reef, but captains must still navigate carefully because coral heads, shallow reef structures and seagrass beds are widespread throughout the Tobago Cays. Good daylight, current charts and careful visual navigation are essential when approaching the island or maneuvering between the surrounding cays. The Marine Park limits vessels to a maximum speed of five knots.

Particular care should be taken around the southwestern side of Baradal, where the buoy-marked turtle sanctuary protects an important seagrass feeding area. Yachts should remain outside the sanctuary boundaries and avoid navigating through shallow turtle habitat. Horseshoe Reef itself should also be treated as a navigational boundary rather than crossed casually, with established approaches used to enter the main lagoon.

Baradal is surrounded by some of the most popular yacht mooring and anchoring areas in the Tobago Cays. Mooring buoys are provided at selected locations within the Marine Park specifically to reduce damage to coral and seagrass, and park rules require yachts to use moorings where provided or anchor only in suitable sandy areas. Anchoring directly in coral or seagrass is prohibited.

Anchorages north and south of Baradal are commonly used by visiting yachts, providing immediate access to the turtle sanctuary and surrounding reefs. Park entry and overnight mooring or anchoring fees apply, with rangers regularly visiting boats within the protected area. Because these waters are environmentally sensitive, crews should inspect any mooring before use and follow instructions from Tobago Cays Marine Park staff.

Baradal forms part of the Tobago Cays Marine Park, a protected area containing coral reefs, seagrass beds, turtle nesting and feeding habitat, beaches and five principal uninhabited cays. Horseshoe Reef stretches for roughly four kilometers and encloses Baradal together with Petit Bateau, Petit Rameau and Jamesby.

The turtle sanctuary is Baradal's defining attraction, but the wider environment is equally important. Marine Park regulations prohibit fishing, removing coral or other marine life, disturbing wildlife and discharging wastewater. Visitors snorkeling with turtles should allow the animals to move freely and avoid touching or chasing them, preserving the natural behavior that makes Baradal such a special yacht charter stop.
