Petit Tabac: Pirates, Palm-Fringed Sands and Wild Cruising Beyond Horseshoe Reef

Petit Tabac is the most isolated of the five principal Tobago Cays, a tiny uninhabited island of white sand, coconut palms and brilliant turquoise water lying east of Horseshoe Reef. Unlike Petit Bateau, Petit Rameau, Baradal and Jamesby, which sit within the reef-protected main lagoon, Petit Tabac lies on the windward side of the reef and feels noticeably wilder and more exposed. Its remoteness makes it one of the most memorable excursions on a Tobago Cays yacht charter.

The island offers exactly the kind of deserted Caribbean scenery many guests imagine before arriving in the Grenadines. A narrow white-sand shoreline wraps around low tropical vegetation, while coral reefs surround the island in almost every direction. Swimming, snorkeling and beach picnics are the main reasons to visit, although the sensitive marine environment means access needs to be approached carefully. The Tobago Cays Marine Park specifically describes Petit Tabac as an isolated beach ideal for a private picnic.

Petit Tabac is also one of the Grenadines' best-known filming locations. The island was used for the deserted-island sequence in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, giving this tiny cay an outsized place in Caribbean pop culture. For yacht charter guests, however, its greatest attraction remains the combination of isolation, clear water and untouched tropical scenery beyond Horseshoe Reef.

Petit Tabac lies outside Horseshoe Reef on the more exposed eastern side of the Tobago Cays. This position means captains must contend with reefs, shallow coral, Atlantic swell and breaking water around the approaches. It should not be approached as casually as the protected lagoon behind Horseshoe Reef. Good daylight, current charts and careful visual navigation are essential throughout this part of the Marine Park.

The wider Tobago Cays Marine Park imposes a maximum vessel speed of five knots and prohibits damage to coral and seagrass. Petit Tabac is especially sensitive because anchor damage around the island became serious enough for the Marine Park to remove its former anchoring zone entirely. Visiting yachts should therefore remain in authorized areas elsewhere in the Tobago Cays and approach Petit Tabac only by tender or water taxi under appropriate conditions.

There is currently no permitted yacht anchorage around Petit Tabac. The Tobago Cays Marine Park introduced a complete anchoring ban after significant coral damage was recorded around the island. Current cruising information published in 2026 confirms that the former anchoring zone beside Petit Tabac remains removed.

Charter yachts should instead use the managed moorings or permitted sandy anchoring areas inside the main Tobago Cays lagoon behind Horseshoe Reef. From there, Petit Tabac can be reached by tender or water taxi when sea conditions permit. Marine Park information has specifically allowed visitors to be dropped ashore while keeping larger yachts away from the damaged reef habitat.

Petit Tabac forms part of the Tobago Cays Marine Park, a protected area encompassing five uninhabited cays, Mayreau and extensive coral reef, seagrass and sandy-bottom habitats. The park supports sea turtles, conchs, lobsters, iguanas and numerous Caribbean reef species, while Petit Tabac occupies the particularly exposed eastern edge of this protected ecosystem.

There are no permanent facilities, restaurants or shops on the island. Visitors should take everything they need with them, remove all rubbish and avoid disturbing vegetation or marine life. Fishing, collecting coral, disturbing wildlife and wastewater discharge are prohibited throughout the Marine Park.
