Ashton, Union Island: Mangrove Lagoons and Local Life in the Southern Grenadines

Ashton is the quieter of Union Island's two principal villages, stretching along the island's southern coast beside the turquoise shallows of Ashton Harbour. While Clifton is the main center for yacht clearance and provisioning, Ashton offers a more residential and distinctly local experience, with colorful homes climbing toward the volcanic hills and views south toward Carriacou and the Grenada Grenadines. Immediately offshore lies one of Union Island's most interesting coastal environments, a mixture of mangroves, seagrass, coral reefs and shallow lagoon water.

The village sits beside Ashton Lagoon, the largest natural bay and mangrove ecosystem in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Frigate Island and an offshore reef system protect much of the lagoon, creating calm, shallow water that contrasts with the deeper yacht anchorages elsewhere around Union Island. The area is particularly attractive for paddleboarding, kayaking, birdwatching and exploring by tender rather than conventional deep-water cruising.

Ashton is also well positioned for exploring the southern end of Union Island. Frigate Island lies immediately offshore, secluded Campbell Beach is nearby, and trails climb toward the island's rugged interior and Mount Taboi. Petit St. Vincent and Carriacou lie farther south, making Ashton a peaceful stop along the natural yacht route between the Tobago Cays and Grenada.

Ashton Harbour is a shallow-water lagoon, and most cruising yachts should not attempt to navigate deep inside it. Official sailing directions state that the bay south of Union Island is filled with shallow flats and that channels around Union Island require local knowledge. Frigate Island is joined to Union by reefs, while additional shallow ground and coral make careful chart work and good daylight important throughout the area.

For larger charter yachts, the practical cruising area lies around the western and southwestern side of Frigate Island rather than close to Ashton village itself. Official sailing directions identify temporary anchoring southwest of Frigate Island in approximately 8.5 to 14.6 meters. Captains approaching this part of Union Island should avoid trying to shortcut through the shallow lagoon and instead follow established deeper-water approaches.

The principal yacht option for Ashton is the Frigate Island anchorage on the outer edge of Ashton Harbour. Discover SVG identifies the western side of Frigate Island as the main alternative anchorage because much of Ashton Harbour is too shallow for cruising yachts. The location offers protection from the prevailing trade winds while keeping Ashton accessible by tender.

Current cruising guidance also reports ten mooring blocks in the Frigate Rock area, which has become particularly popular with kiteboarders and windsurfers. Conditions, mooring availability and post-storm infrastructure can change, so crews should confirm local arrangements before relying on a mooring. Yachts arriving internationally must still complete Customs and Immigration clearance at Clifton Harbour rather than Ashton.

Ashton Lagoon has one of the most interesting conservation stories in the Grenadines. A proposed 300-berth marina development began in 1994 but was abandoned the following year after its causeway disrupted natural water circulation and damaged mangroves, seagrass and marine habitat. A long-running restoration project later reopened water channels, replanted mangroves and created trails, birdwatching towers and suspension bridges, with the restored lagoon officially celebrated in 2019.

Today, the wider Ashton wetland remains environmentally significant, with mangroves, seagrass beds, coral reefs and habitat for resident and migratory birds. For yacht charter guests, Ashton therefore offers something very different from a conventional Caribbean harbor: a combination of local village life, wetland conservation, shallow-water exploration and access to the wild southern coastline of Union Island.
