Jamesby Island: White Sands and Panoramic Lagoon Views in the Tobago Cays

Jamesby Island is a charter location in Tobago Cays & Southern Grenadines, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.

Jamesby Island Charter Guide

Jamesby Island is the smallest and southernmost of the four Tobago Cays sheltered within Horseshoe Reef, a compact uninhabited island surrounded by brilliant turquoise water and coral-rich shallows. Its combination of white sand, rocky slopes and low tropical vegetation creates a classic deserted-island setting in the heart of the Tobago Cays Marine Park. Horseshoe Reef encloses Jamesby together with Petit Bateau, Petit Rameau and Baradal, forming the spectacular protected lagoon that defines this part of the southern Grenadines.

Jamesby's eastern shoreline is its greatest attraction. The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Ministry of Tourism specifically identifies the beach on the island's eastern side as one of the best beaches in the entire Tobago Cays. Clear shallows make it ideal for swimming, while the surrounding reefs and lagoon provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling and exploring by tender.

The island also offers more than time on the sand. Tobago Cays Marine Park highlights Jamesby for its hiking trails, tropical vegetation, birds, iguanas and panoramic views across the Grenadines. A short walk above the shoreline rewards visitors with elevated views over Horseshoe Reef, neighboring Baradal and the extraordinary shades of blue that spread across the lagoon.

Jamesby Island Navigation

Jamesby sits at the southern edge of the main Tobago Cays lagoon, inside the protection of Horseshoe Reef. Despite this sheltered position, the surrounding waters contain coral heads, shallow reef areas and seagrass beds, so yachts should approach in good daylight using current charts and careful visual navigation. Official tourism guidance warns vessels not to cut corners when approaching the Cays because of the risk of encountering coral heads.

The entire Tobago Cays Marine Park has a maximum vessel speed of five knots. Anchoring in coral or seagrass is prohibited, and yachts should use managed moorings where available or choose clear sandy seabed in permitted anchoring areas. These rules are particularly important around Jamesby because the island lies within one of the Grenadines' most sensitive reef and lagoon environments.

Jamesby Island Anchorage

Jamesby does not have a separate developed harbor or marina. Visiting yachts instead use the wider Tobago Cays lagoon, where approximately 30 managed moorings are currently available and additional anchoring remains permitted in designated sandy areas. Moorings are managed by Tobago Cays Marine Park rangers and are recommended because they reduce damage to coral reefs and seagrass beds.

The lagoon remains exposed to the trade winds even behind Horseshoe Reef, so conditions can feel breezy despite the reduction in Atlantic swell. Captains should inspect any mooring before use and ensure that an anchor, if used, is set entirely in sand. Marine Park entrance charges and overnight mooring or anchoring fees apply throughout the protected area.

Jamesby Island General Information

Jamesby is completely uninhabited and has no shops, restaurants or permanent visitor facilities. Its appeal is therefore entirely natural. Guests can land on the beach, follow the island's short trails, look for iguanas and seabirds, swim in the surrounding lagoon or use the island as a starting point for snorkeling excursions toward Horseshoe Reef and Baradal.

Like the rest of the Tobago Cays, Jamesby lies within a protected ecosystem containing coral reefs, seagrass, sea turtles, conchs, lobsters and numerous Caribbean reef species. Fishing, collecting marine life, damaging vegetation, disturbing wildlife and discharging wastewater are prohibited, helping preserve the island's untouched character for future visitors.
