Wallilabou Bay: Pirate History and Rainforest Cruising on St. Vincent

Wallilabou Bay is one of the most distinctive yacht charter stops on St. Vincent, a compact natural harbor surrounded by steep green hills on the island's sheltered leeward coast. Dark volcanic shoreline, clear Caribbean water and dense tropical vegetation create a dramatic setting that feels very different from the white-sand anchorages farther south in the Grenadines. For yachts cruising St. Vincent's western coast, Wallilabou offers scenery, history and convenient access ashore within a remarkably small bay.

The bay is internationally known as a principal Caribbean filming location for the original Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Buildings around Wallilabou Anchorage were transformed into the fictional Port Royal, and parts of the film set were retained after production. Today, visitors can still see preserved set pieces, photographs, props and memorabilia beside the waterfront, making Wallilabou one of the most unusual shore stops on a St. Vincent yacht charter.

Wallilabou also provides an excellent base for exploring St. Vincent's lush interior. Wallilabou Heritage Park and its small waterfall lie nearby, while Dark View Falls and Cumberland Bay can be incorporated into excursions farther along the leeward coast. Yachts continuing north can cruise toward Chateaubelair and the slopes of La Soufrière, while a southbound itinerary leads toward Buccament Bay, Kingstown and the Grenadines.

Wallilabou Bay is a relatively narrow anchorage on the western, leeward side of St. Vincent. Depth increases quickly outside the bay, while limited swinging room closer to shore means yachts typically use a Mediterranean-style arrangement with the bow anchored in deeper water and a long stern line secured ashore. Local boatmen commonly assist arriving yachts with taking lines to the beach or palm trees.

The approach is generally straightforward in suitable daylight and weather, but captains should prepare anchors and long stern lines before entering because maneuvering space becomes limited once inside. Wallilabou is also an official yacht port of entry on St. Vincent's western coast, particularly useful for vessels arriving south from Saint Lucia or Martinique. Clearance availability can vary, so current operating hours should be checked before relying on the bay for formal entry procedures.

Wallilabou's characteristic anchoring arrangement is one of the features that makes the bay memorable. Yachts normally drop the bow anchor and secure the stern toward shore, which allows several vessels to occupy the narrow bay without requiring large swinging circles. Moorings are also available through Wallilabou Anchorage, while shore facilities include water, ice, showers, garbage disposal and a restaurant overlooking the harbor.

The steep hills surrounding Wallilabou provide useful shelter from the prevailing easterly trade winds, although swell and changing wind conditions can still affect comfort. Captains should ensure both the anchor and stern line are secure before leaving the yacht. As with other isolated anchorages on St. Vincent's leeward coast, normal onboard security precautions are sensible when remaining overnight.

Wallilabou Anchorage is the focal point of the bay, with a small hotel, waterfront restaurant and bar, yacht facilities and surviving elements from the Pirates of the Caribbean production. The preserved film area includes a small museum with photographs, costumes and memorabilia from the construction and filming of the original Port Royal set.

Just inland, Wallilabou Heritage Park sits beside the Wallilabou River in a former plantation setting. A small waterfall flows into a shaded natural pool beneath large trees, while remnants of an old stone plantation wall remain visible along the river. The park is close enough to the anchorage to make it an easy shore excursion during a yacht charter stop.
