Isle à Quatre: Private-Island Seclusion and Reef-Lined Bays off Bequia

Isle à Quatre is one of the most secluded yacht charter stops in the northern Grenadines, an uninhabited private island lying only around 1.5 miles south of Bequia and approximately five miles west of Mustique. Unlike the lively anchorages of Admiralty Bay, the island remains almost completely undeveloped, with green hills, rocky headlands, hidden coves and white-sand beaches surrounded by vivid Caribbean water.

Its coastline is particularly striking. Isle à Quatre stretches for almost two miles and contains several distinct bays, including Lagoon Bay, Mahaut Bay, Grand Bay, Soldier Bay and Bednoe Bay. The eastern shoreline is fringed by nearshore reefs, while the steeper western side drops dramatically toward the Caribbean Sea. These contrasting coastlines give visiting yachts a choice of landscapes within a remarkably small island.

For yacht charter guests, Isle à Quatre is primarily about escaping development altogether. Local sailing excursions from Bequia visit the island for swimming, snorkeling, beach picnics and quiet time ashore, and the Bequia Tourism Association specifically promotes the deserted island as a nearby Caribbean day-trip destination. With Petit Nevis close by and Mustique visible farther east, Isle à Quatre fits naturally into a leisurely cruise through the northern Grenadines.

The island lies immediately south of Bequia, making the passage short for yachts departing Admiralty Bay or Friendship Bay. Navigation around Isle à Quatre requires more care than the open approach to Bequia because reefs protect several of the island's eastern bays. Lagoon Bay, Mahaut Bay, Grand Bay and Soldier Bay are all associated with nearshore reef formations, so captains should use current charts, good visibility and careful visual navigation when approaching the coastline.

The western shore is considerably steeper, with cliffs and deep water close to parts of the coastline. Conditions around the island can also change depending on trade-wind strength and swell direction, making Isle à Quatre more suitable as a weather-dependent cruising stop than a guaranteed overnight anchorage. Local charter operators commonly visit sheltered bays around the island and describe a natural harbour on the southern side as a swimming and snorkeling stop.

Lagoon Bay is one of the recognized anchoring areas around Isle à Quatre. It offers a sandy seabed, clear water and a beach at the head of the bay, with reef nearby for snorkeling. Its undeveloped surroundings make it especially attractive once daytime excursion boats have departed.

Other parts of the coastline can provide temporary yacht stops in appropriate weather, but the reefs and exposure mean anchorage selection should be based on current sea conditions rather than scenery alone. There are no marina facilities, fuel docks or provisioning services on the island, so visiting yachts need to be fully self-sufficient. Bequia remains the nearest major base for supplies, clearance and marine services.

Isle à Quatre covers approximately 376 acres and rises to around 450 to 480 feet at its highest point. The interior is largely covered by subtropical vegetation, scrub and small trees, with mature trees concentrated around parts of the eastern and southern coastline. The island's elevated central ridge provides extensive views toward Bequia, Mustique and the surrounding Grenadines.

The island is privately owned and largely undeveloped, so yacht charter guests should not assume unrestricted access to every part of the land. Its strongest appeal remains offshore: quiet bays, beaches, snorkeling and the rare experience of anchoring beside an almost entirely untouched Grenadine island.
