Petit Nevis: Secluded Anchorage, Reefs and Maritime History off Bequia

Petit Nevis Map

Petit Nevis is a charter location in St. Vincent & Bequia, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.

Petit Nevis Charter Guide

Petit Nevis is a small, undeveloped island immediately south of Bequia, offering one of the more unusual yacht charter stops in the northern Grenadines. Surrounded by clear Caribbean water and reefs, the island feels remarkably remote despite its proximity to Bequia. There are no towns, resorts or busy waterfronts here, making Petit Nevis particularly attractive for a quiet daytime anchorage, snorkeling and swimming away from the more established cruising centers.

The waters around Petit Nevis are one of its greatest attractions. Snorkeling excursions from Bequia regularly include the island because of its reefs, tropical fish and clear water, while visiting yachts can anchor offshore and explore the coastline by tender or from the water. The contrast between the rugged shoreline, turquoise shallows and almost completely undeveloped interior gives Petit Nevis a genuine castaway atmosphere.

Petit Nevis also occupies an important place in Bequia's maritime history. The island was historically used as a shore base for Bequia's whaling industry, and remnants of the old processing station can still be found near the coast. Whaling became one of Bequia's major maritime industries during the late 19th century, alongside fishing and wooden boatbuilding, making Petit Nevis a historically significant stop as well as a scenic one.

Petit Nevis Navigation

Petit Nevis lies just south of Bequia, separated from the larger island by a relatively narrow channel. The approach is uncomplicated in good visibility, but currents can develop around the channel and the island's reefs require normal visual navigation and careful use of up-to-date charts. Cruising information places commonly used anchoring depths at roughly 4 to 14 meters, with sand providing good holding in suitable areas.

Because Petit Nevis is a small island surrounded by open water, conditions depend heavily on wind and swell direction. The more sheltered side can provide an attractive stop in normal trade-wind conditions, but exposure increases when swell wraps around the island or winds shift. It is therefore better treated as a weather-dependent cruising stop than as an all-conditions overnight anchorage.

Petit Nevis Anchorage

The principal yacht anchorage is found in the lee of Petit Nevis, where visiting boats can find sandy holding and convenient access to the surrounding reefs. Cruising sources generally describe Petit Nevis as a small anchorage better suited to a limited number of yachts than a large overnight fleet. Stronger currents can be experienced nearby, so captains should confirm that the anchor is properly set before leaving the yacht.

In settled conditions, the anchorage makes an excellent lunch or snorkeling stop between Bequia and islands farther south. There are no marina facilities, fuel docks or provisioning services on Petit Nevis, so yachts should arrive completely self-sufficient. Admiralty Bay and Port Elizabeth on Bequia remain the nearest major centers for yacht services and supplies.

Petit Nevis General Information

Petit Nevis is privately owned and remains largely undeveloped and uninhabited. Its landscape includes tropical vegetation, rocky shoreline and several small beach areas, with reefs extending into the surrounding water. Visitors going ashore should respect private property, signage and any local restrictions rather than assuming unrestricted access across the island.

The remains associated with Petit Nevis's former whaling station provide a striking reminder of Bequia's seafaring past. Today, the island's appeal for yacht charter guests is very different: quiet water, snorkeling, views back toward Bequia and the feeling of having reached an almost untouched corner of the Grenadines.
