Blue Lagoon, St. Vincent: The Sheltered Yacht Gateway to the Grenadines

Blue Lagoon is one of the principal yacht charter hubs on St. Vincent, tucked behind a protective reef on the island's southeastern coast near Ratho Mill and Calliaqua. Its sheltered setting, marina facilities and proximity to the southern Grenadines make it a natural embarkation point for yachts beginning a charter through Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays. St. Vincent and the Grenadines Port Authority describes Blue Lagoon as one of the country's established yachting centers.

Unlike the steep, undeveloped anchorages along St. Vincent's western coast, Blue Lagoon combines tropical scenery with practical yacht infrastructure. Blue Lagoon Hotel & Marina offers berths and moorings, fuel, fresh water, provisioning and assistance with yacht clearance, allowing crews to prepare for longer passages through the Grenadines without returning to Kingstown.

The surrounding south coast also gives charter guests plenty to explore before departure. Young Island lies just to the west, with Fort Duvernette rising from a rocky pinnacle nearby, while Indian Bay and Villa Beach offer convenient swimming and beach stops. Bequia is only a short passage south across the Bequia Channel, so a yacht can leave Blue Lagoon in the morning and be anchored in Admiralty Bay later the same day.

Blue Lagoon is protected from the open sea by a fringing reef, which creates sheltered water but also makes the entrance one of the more technical approaches on St. Vincent. The main marked channel has reported depths of approximately 2.5 to 2.8 meters and a soft-sand seabed. Yachts drawing around 6.5 feet or more may be unable to use this channel at low tide, making draft and tidal conditions important when planning an arrival.

A deeper southern passage through the reef is available for yachts restricted by the main entrance, but it is narrow and intended for daylight use. Local pilotage is recommended for this route. Yachts arriving after dark should use the marked channel or remain on one of the nearby moorings until conditions allow a safe entrance. Captains should always confirm current depths and entrance conditions with the marina before arrival.

Blue Lagoon offers both marina berthing and anchoring or mooring options, making it considerably more flexible than many of St. Vincent's smaller bays. The reef reduces much of the incoming sea, and the lagoon provides a relatively protected place for yachts waiting to provision, clear into the country or prepare for a Grenadines charter. Moorings are also available outside the marina entrance for vessels waiting on tide, daylight or berth availability.

Space inside the most protected parts of the lagoon is limited, particularly because Blue Lagoon is an active charter base. Larger yachts or vessels with greater draft may prefer to remain outside the inner marina area and use nearby moorings or suitable anchoring space. Conditions can occasionally become rolly despite the reef protection, so captains should consider swell as well as wind direction when choosing an overnight position.

Blue Lagoon functions as one of St. Vincent's most useful yacht logistics centers. It is a recognized port of entry, and the wider area supports charter operators, dive businesses, provisioning and marine services. Visiting yachts entering St. Vincent and the Grenadines must complete clearance formalities at an official port of entry before continuing to other anchorages.

For charter guests, its location is equally valuable. Young Island is just offshore and offers a private resort, beach and clear water, while nearby Fort Duvernette can be climbed for panoramic views across St. Vincent's southern coast. Indian Bay and Villa Beach are also close to Blue Lagoon, giving guests several easy options for swimming or a relaxed afternoon ashore before sailing south into the Grenadines.
