Port Elizabeth, Bequia: The Sailing Heart of Admiralty Bay

Port Elizabeth is the colorful waterfront capital of Bequia and the beating heart of the island's yacht charter scene. Wrapped around the northern end of Admiralty Bay on Bequia's sheltered western coast, the town combines a classic Caribbean anchorage with waterfront restaurants, small shops, markets and marine services. Admiralty Bay is naturally protected from the prevailing trade winds and has long made Port Elizabeth one of the most popular yacht stops in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Life in Port Elizabeth remains closely connected to the water. Yachts fill Admiralty Bay throughout the sailing season, tenders move between the anchorage and waterfront docks, and ferries arrive from St. Vincent and neighboring islands. Ashore, the town is compact enough to explore on foot, with fruit stalls, grocery stores, cafés, restaurants and yacht services concentrated close to the harbor. It is an especially useful stop for provisioning or arranging repairs before continuing deeper into the Grenadines.

One of the best ways to experience Port Elizabeth is along the Belmont Walkway, which follows the southern side of Admiralty Bay past waterfront restaurants, bars, dive shops and small hotels. The coastal path continues toward Princess Margaret Beach, allowing charter guests to step from the town directly into one of Bequia's most beautiful beach areas without needing a vehicle. Fort Hamilton, overlooking the opposite side of the bay, provides another memorable excursion with panoramic views across Port Elizabeth and the anchored yachts below.

Yachts approach Port Elizabeth through Admiralty Bay from the west, entering a broad natural harbor that can accommodate a substantial number of vessels. Anchoring is possible on both sides of the central ferry channel, but the channel itself must remain clear because regular ferries and commercial vessels operate between Bequia and the surrounding islands. Captains should also keep clear of the designated tanker mooring area near the ferry dock.

Port Elizabeth is an official port of entry for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with Customs and Immigration located in the Bequia Revenue Office opposite the ferry dock. This makes the town particularly convenient for yachts arriving internationally or completing clearance before continuing south through the Grenadines. Several dinghy docks are available around the waterfront, and marine services, fuel, water and repairs can be arranged locally.

Admiralty Bay is the principal anchorage for Port Elizabeth and one of the best-known yacht anchorages in the Grenadines. Yachts can anchor in suitable sandy areas on either side of the ferry route or use one of the many locally operated mooring buoys. The bay is well sheltered from the prevailing trade winds, although it can become crowded during the main charter season and around major sailing events.

Moorings are widely available, but they are not uniformly regulated, so captains should verify their condition before relying on them. Yachts choosing to anchor should look for clear sandy patches and allow sufficient swinging room while remaining outside ferry and tanker traffic areas. Princess Margaret Beach offers another popular anchoring position farther southwest within Admiralty Bay for yachts wanting quicker access to the beach.

Port Elizabeth is Bequia's main town and the island's commercial, transport and yachting center. Despite its popularity with sailors, it retains a relaxed scale, with small businesses, local produce stalls and independent restaurants rather than large-scale resort development. The Belmont Walkway is central to the waterfront experience and links the town with Belmont and the coastal trail toward Princess Margaret Beach.

For yacht charter guests, Port Elizabeth is particularly valuable because nearly everything needed for a cruising stop is close at hand. Guests can provision the yacht, dine ashore, visit Fort Hamilton, stroll the waterfront or walk to the beach before continuing toward Mustique, Canouan and the southern Grenadines.
