Lower Bay: Golden Sands and Laid-Back Yacht Cruising in Bequia
Lower Bay is a charter location in St. Vincent & Bequia, a yacht charter area in Grenadines.
Lower Bay Charter Guide
Lower Bay is one of Bequia's most relaxed yacht charter stops, a broad sweep of golden sand tucked along the island's sheltered western coast within Admiralty Bay. Less busy than Port Elizabeth and more residential than neighboring Princess Margaret Beach, it offers charter guests clear Caribbean water, an easygoing beachfront atmosphere and a beautiful place to spend a full day away from the island's main harbor activity. The Bequia Tourism Association describes Lower Bay as a broad golden-sand beach with a sleepy fishing village at its southern end.
The beach is well suited to swimming and snorkeling, with clear water and rocky sections around the edges of the bay providing opportunities to explore beneath the surface. Small restaurants and beach bars are scattered close to the sand, giving guests an easy option for lunch or drinks ashore without sacrificing the quiet character that makes Lower Bay so appealing.
Lower Bay also sits within easy reach of Bequia's best-known western attractions. Princess Margaret Beach lies immediately to the north, while Port Elizabeth can be reached by road, water taxi or a longer coastal walk. Yachts can therefore enjoy a quieter anchorage at Lower Bay while keeping the restaurants, shops and marine services of Admiralty Bay conveniently close.
Lower Bay Navigation
Lower Bay occupies the southern portion of Bequia's protected western coastline and is reached from the main waters of Admiralty Bay. The approach is generally uncomplicated in suitable conditions, with no major offshore passage required once inside the wider bay. Captains should nevertheless use current charts, monitor depth and remain aware of swimming areas and other yachts positioned along the southern shoreline.
Yachts approaching from Port Elizabeth or Princess Margaret Beach simply continue south around the coastline toward Lower Bay. The area is less convenient for immediate access to town, but this is part of its attraction. Bequia cruising guidance identifies Lower Bay as a quieter anchoring area with good snorkeling off the beach and calmer conditions in many weather patterns.
Lower Bay Anchorage
Lower Bay forms part of the wider Admiralty Bay anchorage system and offers an attractive alternative to the busier waters off Port Elizabeth. Yachts can anchor offshore in suitable sandy areas while remaining clear of designated swimming zones and allowing sufficient swinging room. The location is particularly appealing for charter guests who want to wake up directly opposite one of Bequia's longest beaches.
Admiralty Bay is known for generally good holding in sand with some weed, and the southern section toward Lower Bay can be calmer in many conditions. As elsewhere around Bequia, captains should check that the anchor is securely set and monitor any swell or wind shift that could affect comfort overnight.
Lower Bay General Information
Lower Bay has developed around a small fishing community rather than a large resort complex. Guesthouses, villas, restaurants, bars, a grocery shop and other small businesses sit behind the beach, creating enough activity to make an afternoon ashore enjoyable without overwhelming the bay's laid-back character.
The beach is also large enough that quieter sections remain easy to find even when the beachfront bars are busy. Visitors should be aware of marked manchineel trees along parts of the coast. Their fruit and sap are toxic, and sheltering beneath them, particularly during rain, should be avoided.
